Karen Boomer

ARTIST STATEMENT

My art is about self-discovery. I create it to excite the intellect and imagination of its viewer. Viewers notice hidden patterns, light changes and unexpected details if they change perspectives. As they discover the hidden possibilities in the art, I hope they discover unrealized potential in themselves. This is the purpose of my art: to inspire others to be who they’re meant to be.

Glass is uniquely appropriate for this vision. It is solid and liquid, transparent and opaque, reflective and refractive. My approach is analytical and intuitive. My pieces combine the intellectual complexity of working out a puzzle with fun. I’ve grown as an artist and my art reflects this. Always with me, glass continues to show me the way to balance change with inner peace, a quality I hope transforms others’ lives as it has my own.

ARTIST BIO

Karen Boomer grew up in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. While studying graphic design and fine art in Mesa, Arizona, in 1988, she discovered kiln-fired glass. She spent the next decade raising her children and devoting time to glass, supplementing training with practice and self-education. In 1999, she studied lampworking at the Flame and Fusion school in Southern California, and in 2001 moved from Scottsdale to Prescott, Arizona, to launch Hot Glass Studio. It set her on a new path of self discovery reflected in her art. Designs and subjects such as Asian symbols, animals and geometrics are drawn from Karen’s experiences with eastern philosophy, abstract design and the natural world. Designs are completely original and she uses only natural materials such as metal and wood. Since founding Hot Glass Studio, Karen has participated in fine art shows and studio tours, and exhibited at galleries. Her work is nationally collected and she’s becoming recognized as an emerging artist of note. Expanding in complexity and scale, her art is moving toward the civic arena, where Karen hopes her work will inspire the widest possible audience.
